A 5-day Maldives trip from India is easy to reach and can be tuned to any budget — a resort island (overwater villas, speedboat or seaplane transfer) for a classic honeymoon-style trip, or a guesthouse on a local island (like Maafushi) for a much cheaper base with the same snorkeling and sandbank access. Direct flights from several Indian cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram) reach Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé in roughly 2.5–4.5 hours depending on origin city. The dry season (November–April) generally has calmer seas and less rain, though diving conditions vary by atoll and season.
Choosing your base
Option A: Resort island
Most resorts occupy their own private island, reached from Malé by speedboat (nearer atolls, under an hour) or seaplane (further atolls, 30–45 minutes). Overwater villas and all-inclusive packages are common; prices span a wide range depending on the resort tier.
Option B: Local island guesthouse
Islands like Maafushi allow independent budget travel — guesthouses, public beaches, and day-trip excursions (snorkeling, sandbanks, dolphin watching) booked locally, at a fraction of resort-island cost. Alcohol and swimwear norms are more restricted on local islands than on resort islands, so pack and behave accordingly.
Sample 5-day plan
- Day 1 — Arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE), transfer to your island (speedboat/seaplane for resorts; public ferry or speedboat for local islands).
- Days 2–4 — Snorkeling or diving excursions, a sandbank or uninhabited-island day trip, and resort/guesthouse downtime.
- Day 5 — Morning free, transfer back to Malé for your flight home.
Budget guidance
As of mid-2026, a guesthouse-based 5-day trip (local island stay, shared excursions) can run roughly ₹35,000–₹60,000 per person excluding flights, while resort-island stays vary enormously by property, often several times that. Direct flights from India are typically in the ₹15,000–₹30,000 round-trip range depending on city and season. Treat these as rough bands, not quotes.
